Program Description & Content

Developed by our Head Instructor, Susan Deveney, who has mediated cases for divorcing spouses in numerous states over the past two decades, this is a program consisting of 24 program hours, 1.5 of which are in ethics, offered as either an intensive 2.5 on-site days, or over a six week period (online on Saturday mornings) at the participant's option. The program is designed specifically for attorneys who are interested in adding a new stream of income to their practices as divorce mediators.

Over a period of 2.5 intensive days, participants are completely immersed in instruction on how to use their existing skill sets to assist spouses for whom divorce is inevitable in reaching fair, amicable and equitable resolutions to issues that family courts require to be addressed before spouses can obtain an uncontested divorce.

Attendees learn to professionally and successfully mediate cases for divorcing spouses, as well as how to acquire divorce mediation cases and manage caseload. Legal and financial resources are available, as needed, to graduates who receive their Divorce Mediation Training through this Program.

Participants leave the program with an immediately useful body of knowledge that expands their capabilities to help existing and future clients in the privacy of their offices, recommend fair and amicable resolutions to the issues the family court requires divorcing spouses to address once they have decided to divorce and mediate all aspects of a divorce case from beginning to end, using experts as resources when necessary.

There are no additional courses, certifications or supervisory sessions required after completion of the program.  Graduates are not required to obtain any court certification or approval prior to providing divorce mediation services. Participants are trained as private practice mediators and set their own fees.

Expectations and Requirements

The Program is presented in a professional business seminar environment with a focus on enabling attorneys and paralegals to immediately add an additional stream of income to an existing practice or to a separate divorce mediation practice. Participants are engaged in a variety of learning activities, including  interactive lectures, group exercises, individual exercises and role-play exercises. This is an intensive, immersive program that requires the participant’s full attention and effort for its duration. Upon completion of the program, students shall receive a formal Divorce Mediator Certificate as well as continuing education credit.

Graduates of this Program are not required to observe cases or be supervised when conducting cases upon completion. Legal and financial resources will be available to assist Program graduates as needed. Graduates are trained at a level of professionalism that permits them to set their own professional fees consistent with the fees typically charged by such professionals in their market area, generally between $250 - $450 per session hour. There is no mandated fee schedule. This is not part of managed care.

The tax-deductible program tuition includes more than 24 hours of training, a comprehensive training manual, access to legal and financial resources when handling cases and a professional Divorce Mediator Certificate suitable for framing.
